The Moose Jaw and District Chamber of Commerce is excited to once again host Reality Check in partnership with the Prairie South School Division, Holy Trinity Catholic School Division, and Saskatchewan Polytechnic on October 16, 2025 (9:00am to 3:00pm) at Saskatchewan Polytechnic Gymnasium.
During the event, Grade 9 students will be given a student card with an assigned random family description (married with children or single parent with children) and then an imaginary job and annual salary. They will then visit the financial institution booth to understand what their monthly take home is after taxes. Although they must visit every booth, they are empowered to make their own personal decisions.
Once they’ve paid their bills, the students will return back to the beginning to evaluate how they did and receive advice on possibly re-thinking some of the choices that they have made during the event. For example, trading in the brand new sports car they choose for an older model 4 door car.
It’s a great opportunity for the students to gain a deeper understanding of how their parents live on a day-to-day basis. It really puts things in perspective and gives them some real-world experience and therefore, a better idea of what to expect in the future.
To provide real insight, every booth is hosted by local volunteers from their correlating industries, i.e., auto salesman, bank officials, childcare providers etc.
With the monetary donation of $200 your business will be recognized as participants of the event. Your commitment will assist us not only making this a successful fun event for the Grade 9 students but to also provide lucky participants with a RESP bursary fund which they can use upon their Grade 12 graduation for post-secondary education.
