Dear Commercial Property Owners,

There are few taxes that cause as much confusion and concern than property tax. Many of you will have received your tax assessments and you likely have questions. As an advocate for your business, we are here to help you get answers.

We are pleased to announce we are hosting the Moose Jaw Chamber of Commerce Information Session on Property Tax, an in-person event taking place Sept 9th at 10am – Shrine Club Masonic Temple. Please register for the event at www.mjchamber.com .

We have invited representatives from the City of Moose Jaw, local property owners and our two MLAs, Greg Lawrence, MLA Moose Jaw Wakamow and Tim McLeod, MLA Moose Jaw North.

Each municipality has some latitude as they set the mill rates and the levels for commercial and residential taxes. If you have a location-specific or general question on the process, this is the session you need to attend.

We have asked Rod Van Slyck and Kristy Van Slyck from Viridian Property Corp. to speak on discussion topics:  Building Class, Cap Multiplier, Rental Range, Mezzanines and Districts as they have extensive experience of working through the appeal process.  Ryan Simpson from the Altas Group will also be in attendance to give further support regarding understanding the Tax Assessment.

We know the process of property tax is complex. With a four-year assessment cycle, the inclusion of school and municipal taxes, and the terminology used, you are not alone if you are confused on this particular tax. We are working on systemic issues around this tax with our colleagues in other chambers across the province. While it has been a long-time irritant to businesses, we believe a better solution is possible, but it may take some time and we will keep you briefed on the outcome of those discussions. However, you have told us you want answers now, so we are acting.

While each business situation is different and we cannot, as the chamber, offer specific insight to everyone, what we can do is connect you with the people who can offer both specific and general information.

All commercial property owners are welcome to attend, we look forward to seeing you on Sept 9th.

Rob Clark, CEO
Moose Jaw & District Chamber of Commerce
